I’m not a regular watcher of late night talk shows, but I happened to catch an episode of Jimmy Fallen a while back. The young woman who plays Wonder Woman was the main guest. What a cutie she is! Watching her on TV made me want to check out the movie.
As they chatted about her life and upcoming projects, Jimmy asked her if the rumor was true. “Have you really never tried a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup?”
“No, I never have. I love peanut butter, but I’ve never had it with chocolate.”
Can you imagine that? Most Americans would consider a Reese’s Cup to be an everyday treat, but this Israeli starlet found it to be a mysterious delicacy.
Well, of course, Jimmy hooked her up with her first taste of Reese goodness. I held my breath as she peeled back the black wrapper and took a tentative nibble. Her eyebrows raised, and her lips curled into a delighted grin. “Mmm, that’s good. Really good.”
The crowd broke into applause, and, honestly, I felt like clapping too. I experienced full-blown glee over this gal experiencing the delight of trying something new and loving it.
I’ve been basking in my own brand of delight lately.
A few months ago, I did something I never dreamed I’d ever do. I signed on as a Beauty Guide for LimeLight by Alcone, a professional-grade skin care and cosmetic company. I’m not a girly girl. I wear makeup, but only to keep myself from looking washed out.
I initially ordered some of the products simply to support my best buddy in her new business, but when I started using them, people started noticing.
“Your skin looks amazing.”
“I love that lipstick!”
“What are you doing differently? Your skin is radiant.”
One night, as I sat across the restaurant booth from my makeup artist bestie, she said, “You love the products so much. Why not sell them?”
My gut response was, “No way…I’m not a salesperson,” but I decided to go against my gut for a change. I let the crazy idea sink in and become a possibility.
A conversation I had with my counselor just a week before returned to my memory. “I want to try new things. I’ve been too afraid to do it before now, but I’m ready to step out of the fear and just go for it.”
I was thinking of something along the lines of taking a dance class or throwing out my shingle as a Christian speaker. I definitely was not thinking about selling makeup.
Yet there I was sitting in a Chili’s booth thinking about doing that very thing. As I drove home, I felt a mixture of fear and excitement grow in me. “I’m going to do this,” I said outloud to myself. I may stink at it, but I’ll never know if I don’t try.
Well, I don’t stink at it, and I’m having the time of my life! Just as that young actress found herself smiling over those first tastes of chocolate and peanut butter, I find myself grinning over my friends asking me, of all people, for makeup advice!
I love how much better I feel about myself these days, and I hope I’ll be able to gently nudge lots of other women to invest in their skin and their smiles.
With the start of this new year, why don’t you take a chance and try something you never thought you’d ever do. Take that class. Volunteer at the rescue mission. Sign up for a Bible study. Save up for that trip. Start a small business. Color your hair. Wear red lipstick.
Find the delight of trying.
Lord, thank you for creating a world full of opportunities. Guide us, this year, to the new adventures you have for us. Amen
