The last time I was at kids camp was in the summer of 1986. I was 16 years old and headed toward my junior year of high school. I can still taste the hot yeast rolls from Camp Bethany. I’m FB friends with some of the “kids” I wrangled at that camp. They’re all grown and stuff. And so am I.
About two months ago, I was on my way to Arizona to visit my sons when I got a text from Lauren, my church’s children’s ministry director, asking me to pray about being a counselor at kids camp. Right away, I knew God wanted me to say yes, but my still-worn-slap-out-from-the-school-year self wasn’t so sure. I reminded her I was having foot surgery, and I wasn’t sure of what the recovery would be like. We agreed to play it by ear.
Well, my foot is still less than sound, but it’s sound enough, so off to kids camp I go! And guess what? I’m ecstatic! The late night girl giggles. The stinky socks on the bathroom floor. The sunscreening of freckled faces. I want it all!
The camp theme is “Jesus is my Super Hero.” We’ll be scouring the Old and New Testaments to learn how our God is everything we need. Yes, I want the kids to have a blast, but if even one of them opens his or her heart and life to Jesus, my heart will blast off! This world’s in a heap of trouble. We need a new generation of Christ followers to be light bearers and hope extenders. I’m claiming this group of kids for Jesus.
Will you join me in praying for the campers?
Thank you for the privilege to speak life and truth into these young ones. Eliminate every distraction from their impressionable hearts so they can embrace Your truth. Prepare the soil of their hearts to receive those good news seeds. Please keep them safe, well, and happy to be at camp. Help their mommas not to worry about anything but to pray without ceasing for their babies with deep gratitude.
Become their super hero, Lord Jesus, and thank you for being mine.
In Jesus’ Name, AMEN
